Our New Zealand Trip - Akaroa

New Zealand - Akaroa, Canterbury, South Island

Date: 2007-05-09

Akaroa is on the south east of Christchurch. The scenic drive along the mountain is very pretty.

From Akaroa Civic Trust site:

Akaroa is one of New Zealand’s best preserved and most beautifully situated historic towns. The sheltered bay on which it sits opens onto a magnificent harbour that is the eroded and flooded crater of an ancient volcano. The harbour is ringed by rugged high hills. The town’s superb setting is what first impresses visitors to Akaroa. The town’s setting is matched by its historic and architectural interest.

In 2012, my friends are having cruise trips - Sydney to Auckland & Auckland to Sydney. From their itinerary, Akaroa is the port for Christchurch.

My 2007 visit impression - Akaroa is a small fishing village. If you get off from cruise ship, you can walk the village in a few hours. If you like to visit Christchurch, you have to get a car and drive there and the time would be at least 1.5 hours.
