St Petersburg-City Drive and St. Isaac Cathedral

St Isaac Cathedral, City Drive, St Petersburg

Date: 2012-05-18

From a cloudy to rainy morning, we were on the excursion bus. Rain stopped around noon. When we were at river side, it rained so hard, nobody dared to get out the bus to take pictures of Hermitage from the other side of the river bank. When the bus got to a site close to a war ship, our Russian guide asked anyone dare to get out? I got out right away and immediately some others dare to get out also. I have to take some pictures of the bridge.

St. Isaac's Cathedral central gold dome is one of the largest in the world, and covered with 220 pounds of gold. It was commissioned by Alexander I in 1818 and took more than three decades to complete. Several years ago, a colleague from St. Petersburg gave me an old post card of the Cathedral. It had old soviet cars parked outside. I did not know anything about this place, now, I am visiting in person.
The domed Russian style building is Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. This restored church boasts a dramatic "Russian-style" exterior and is built on the site of the March 1, 1881 assassination of Tsar Alexander II. The church is decorated with colorful ceramic tiles. There is a souvenir market nearby. Our tour guide warned us about pickpockets.
