New Zealand Trip - Aoraki Mountain Cook

New Zealand - Mountain Cook

Date: 2007-05-17 to 007-05-18

On our journey - Queenstown to Mt. Cook, we passed an historical gold mine and a Chinese worker's village. On the way, we saw a sightseeing fruit market, it is for tourists, of course, price has to be higher.

When we got to Mountain Cook, it was close to 4 PM and we had to find a hotel. Around the area, there is one YHA and one 5 star hotel - The Hermitage. We reached YHA first and selected there. It is clean and nice, our first time experience of government Hostel was indeed a great one. We later walked up to the 5 star hotel, they did offer a better rate just for that night because it was dark and no more passengers will show up.

Mountain Cook is New Zealand's highest mountain, 3754 m. This place is a national park, also, a UNESCO's world natural heritage. When you see the pictures, you will find out we shot a lot of sky, it just because the sky is so clear. We have not seen so many stars when we are in the city.

After dropping our luggage in YHA, we went to see the glacier. Due to global warming effect, the glacier is getting shorter.

Mountain Cook area is purely for tourists and sporty persons such as hiker or skier.  There is no shop. Luckily, there is one self service gas pump - no attendant, you have to use credit card for payment. The price is about $1.80/liter.

I got up early to shoot beautiful sun break mountain and sky.

The YHA kitchen is huge with many cooking stations.

From our bedroom look out - Mt. Cook is there
